In this dramatic scene from Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, Rubens captures a moment of voyeurism and internal conflict. Angelica, enchanted and vulnerable, lies asleep on a secluded island conjured by a hermit’s spell. Cloaked in shadow, the hermit looks on with both longing and restraint, his hesitation underscoring the moral tension at the heart of the scene. A demonic figure looming behind him hints at darker urges and spiritual corruption.

Rubens’ mastery is evident in the rich palette, dynamic lighting, and sensual rendering of the female form. The interplay of flesh and shadow, impulse and conscience, reflects his ability to fuse classical narrative with the emotional intensity of the Baroque.
