Interior of a Synagogue transforms a moment of worship into a scene of mystical drama. Vast architectural space is populated by elongated, almost spectral figures, their gestures and movement captured in Magnasco’s energetic, darting brushwork. Light animates the subdued palette, creating an atmosphere both solemn and otherworldly.
Alessandro Magnasco (1667–1749) was an Italian painter known for his expressive, often eccentric depictions of religious and genre scenes. Though not Jewish, he repeatedly returned to synagogue interiors, reflecting Enlightenment-era curiosity about marginalized communities. His work departs from traditional Baroque grandeur, offering intimate, enigmatic visions imbued with spiritual presence and subtle social commentary.
