In this Baroque scene, Ribera portrays the mythic figure Silenus, tutor to Dionysus, in a state of luxurious abandon. Reclining on a cloth with rosy cheeks and relaxed limbs, Silenus lifts a wine cup as a satyr pours more libation, while the goat-horned god Pan places a wreath of vines upon his head. Symbolic elements—such as the shell of mortality, a turtle of sloth, and a snake of wisdom—punctuate the composition with quiet allegory. Executed with dramatic realism and earthy color, the work reflects Ribera’s engagement with classical mythology through the stark immediacy of everyday flesh.

Jusepe de Ribera (1591–1652) was a Spanish Baroque painter active primarily in Naples. Closely associated with Caravaggio’s legacy, Ribera is known for his uncompromising realism, dramatic chiaroscuro, and unidealized portrayals of saints, philosophers, and mythological figures. His work often confronts the physicality of the human body, blending classical subject matter with a stark, almost brutal naturalism that set him apart from his contemporaries.
