Male Portrait Study (A Bad Conscience), Franz von Stuck (c. 1896)

A man’s gaze recoils into himself, eyes sharp with inner accusation, as if caught in the relentless scrutiny of his own conscience. Stuck sculpts the face and shoulders in oil with stark precision, a palette of cold grays and muted ochres amplifying the weight of guilt and self-reproach. Shadows press against him, light revealing every taut line, every tremor of regret, every subtle tightening of muscle — a portrait of conscience made flesh, unflinching and inescapable.

Franz von Stuck (1863–1928) was a central force in German Symbolism and a founding member of the Munich Secession. Known for merging mythological subjects with bold, stylized forms, he brought a theatrical sensibility to his paintings that emphasized mood over narrative. His work’s dark richness and psychological edge placed him among the most distinctive artists of his generation.

Due to variation in monitor settings, finished products may appear different than they do on your screen.

To offer a broad range of sizes, each image is carefully adapted to its canvas dimensions. As a result, slight variations in composition may occur, and some reproductions may differ subtly from the original work.

Our canvases feature mirrored edges to create a seamless wrap-around effect without altering the original image. This effect is more noticeable on smaller canvas sizes.
