Drawn from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this selection depicts Ophelia as she drifts toward death, singing softly as the brook pulls her under. Her open arms and upward gaze recall the serenity of saints and martyrs, yet her pale figure is framed by wildflowers and tangled weeds that speak of fragility and loss. Millais painted the background along the banks of the Hogsmill River in Surrey and superimposed his model (who posed fully clothed in a bathtub) over the marshy background. Though initially met with mixed reviews, Ophelia is now regarded as a masterpiece of 19th-century art. Its combination of literary drama and unsettling beauty influenced generations of artists and continues to fascinate with its mingling of innocence, eroticism, and mortality.

John Everett Millais was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and became one of Britain’s most celebrated Victorian painters. Known for his meticulous detail, luminous color, and emotionally charged subjects, he moved from early symbolic works to later portraits and genre scenes marked by refined realism. His career bridged radical artistic innovation and mainstream success, securing his place as a central figure in 19th-century British art.

Due to variation in monitor settings, finished products may appear different than they do on your screen.

To offer a broad range of sizes, each image is carefully adapted to its canvas dimensions. As a result, slight variations in composition may occur, and some reproductions may differ subtly from the original work.

Our canvases feature mirrored edges to create a seamless wrap-around effect without altering the original image. This effect is more noticeable on smaller canvas sizes.
