Bacchante with an Ape is a vivid glimpse into the ecstatic rites of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and frenzy. The bacchante, flushed and disheveled, presses grapes into a golden cup while her gaze meets the viewer’s, playful and daring. At her side, an ape mirrors her gesture, adding a note of satire and hinting at the fragile line between joy and folly.
Hendrick ter Brugghen (1588–1629) was a Dutch painter of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, celebrated for bringing Caravaggio’s dramatic realism to Northern European subjects. Through rich lighting, tactile detail, and careful composition, Bacchante with an Ape balances sensuality, humor, and subtle moral reflection, transforming revelry into a theatrical meditation on human desire and excess.

To offer a broad range of sizes, each image is carefully adapted to its canvas dimensions. As a result, slight variations in composition may occur, and some reproductions may differ subtly from the original work.
Our canvases feature mirrored edges to create a seamless wrap-around effect without altering the original image. This effect is more noticeable on smaller canvas sizes.
