Four Seasons in One Head is a late-career masterpiece in which Giuseppe Arcimboldo transforms nature into a single, haunting visage. Painted upon his return to Milan, the work fuses flowers, fruits, and gnarled branches to represent spring, summer, autumn, and winter, merging botanical fantasy with introspective reflection. The three-quarter pose and shadowed features lend a psychological depth absent from his earlier, more playful works, suggesting a meditation on the “winter” of his life.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526–1593) was an Italian painter renowned for his imaginative composite portraits, blending natural elements into human forms. His work fuses wit, symbolism, and technical precision, offering both visual delight and reflection on nature, mortality, and the passage of time.
