Judith transforms the legendary heroine into a vision of avenging beauty and resolute strength. Draped in red and gold, sword in hand, she embodies courage and justice as she confronts the Assyrian general Holofernes, recalling the biblical tale in which she saves her city through bravery and cunning. Benjamin-Constant heightens the drama with a glinting palette, bold costume, and compositional flair.

Jean-Joseph-Benjamin Constant (1845–1902) was a French painter known for his Orientalist scenes and portraits, celebrated for blending theatricality, color, and historical narrative. In Judith, he draws on Delacroix’s influence and his travels to Spain and Morocco to create a strikingly exotic and dramatic retelling, immortalizing a figure of female heroism and moral resolve.
